2008 World Triathlon Champion Helen Jenkins talks about being made homeless by the British Cycling team, her dream dinner guests, and her fear of karaoke. Who was your sporting hero growing up? I don't know, I don't really have one. I was more inspired by watching the Olympics Games in general not by one individual. What would you be doing if you were not a triathlete? I probably would have been a nurse. That was my originally plan but I couldn't fit it around the training for triathlon. If your house was on fire, what one item would you save? My dog, Barney. What would you sing at karaoke? Oh I would never do karaoke. If I really had to, I'd probably sing something cheesy like one of the songs off Dirty Dancing. What is the best freebie you've ever blagged? One of my sponsors is Oakley and they made me a pair of great sunglasses in the British colours for the last Olympics. That was probably the best freebie I've got. Who would be your three dream dinner-party guests? I'd use it as an excuse to get some sporting tips so they would be all sport people. I'd go with Lance Armstrong for the cycling; Michael Phelps for the swimming; and Haile Gebrselassie for athletics. Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with? Oh probably one of the politicians. I won't name any one person because they all say the same thing really. What was the best thing about being in the Olympic village in Beijing? Just being part of what was essentially a sporting city. Everyone there was involved in sport and it was really a great experience. And what was the worst? We were sharing a place with the cycling team but then one of our team got sick and we were kicked out so none of the cyclist would get infected, then we moved to another place and got kicked out of that too. So all the moving was quite stressful. What single thing would you take with you to a desert island? It would have to be my husband...oh and Barney would have to come too so I'd insist on two things. What is your top tip you would give to people to stay in shape.? Train with a friend. It is always great to have someone to go out and train with. If you are not feeling motivated they can help you get through it and vice versa. |
