      Due to the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, there is a good potential that the oil will reach the beaches of Florida. Reports have shown, that oil has started to wash-up on the beaches of Pensacola, Florida.
WTC (Ironman) holds two races, in November, on Florida’s Gulf coast beaches; Ironman Florida and the Foster grant 70.3 World Championship. For the athletes benefit, we decided to take a look at some of the numbers involved with Ironman Florida. We looked at the following: How much does WTC collect in athlete registration fees for a race of this size? How much would WTC pay out if every registered athlete withdrew from the race?  On average, how much would an age group athlete have to pay to race at the 2010 Ironman Florida? According to the current 2010 Ironman Florida participant list there are 2849 athletes registered. If each athlete paid $550.00 (USD) to register for this race, WTC would have $1,566,950.00 in registration fees. This does not include the, $27.50, Active.com fee. With the current oil spill situation in the Gulf of Mexico, let’s assume everyone withdraws from IMFL on or before September 15th. WTC will refund each athlete $150.00. The total amount refunded to (2849) athletes would be $427,350.00. Would that hurt WTC? Probably not, as WTC would still have $1,139,600.00 in athlete registration fees. Below is an estimated list of what an athlete may end up paying to train and race an Ironman distance event. Registration Fee: $550.00 Active.com Fee: $38.18 Coaching per month: $150.00 x 6 months = $900.00 Hotel: $100.00/night x 5 nights = $500.00 Rental Car: $50/day x 5 days = $250.00 Airfare: $400.00 Nutrition/Hydration: $50.00/month x 6 months = $300.00 (Based on a box of nutrition bars and a canister of sport drink mix per month.) Bike maintenance: $150.00 Bike Shipping: $225.00 Running Shoes: $125.00 Wetsuit: $250.00 Misc. Equipment: $500.00 Total: $4,177.50 The costs could be lower and they could be a lot greater, especially if an athlete buys a bike, bike accessories, race wheels, GPS, gas for vehicle to and from training sessions, food, massage, A.R.T, heart rate monitors, goggles, masters programs, swim training equipment, gym fees, etc. These costs are based on averages but it will give you an idea what it could cost to do an Ironman distance event. What do athlete's have to lose if WTC decides to cancel the race?
